Gorlaeus office building - Leiden University

Since 2004, we have been delivering sustainable and financially responsible real estate solutions. Through strategic advice and leading projects, we are shaping the future of real estate.

Key Features: Sustainable demolition, circular economy, reuse of building materials, asbestos remediation, certified building product, preparation for new Science campus.

As part of the development of the new Science campus, Leiden University undertook the sustainable demolition of four buildings on the Gorlaeus complex. The works involved pre-demolition, asbestos remediation, and complete demolition of the High-rise, LCP Building, Cluster Building, and the Solvent Warehouse. A notable feature of this project was its circular approach: all rubble was broken on-site and directly certified as a building product, minimizing transport.

For the preparatory phase of this project, the BREEAM Demolition and Deconstruction certificate was achieved with a rating of Excellent (82.04%). C2N acted as the BREEAM Assessor and guided the process toward certification.

This project underscores Leiden University's commitment to contributing to a sustainable society and the circular economy. The sustainable demolition of the Gorlaeus complex is a key element of the broader strategy for future-proof university real estate.
